Base jumper fined NOK 30 000 for base jumping from forbidden mountain

A base jumper has been fined NOK 30 000 for base jumping from the mountain Trolltindene, in Romsdalen, Norway. In addition to the hefty fine, the court decided to confiscate his parachute and jumpsuit, which is worth NOK 32 000, according to the owner.

The verdict against Thomas Berg Hestad, the younger brother of Molde Football Club’s captain, Daniel Berg Hestad, was reached in Romsdal tingrett (The Romsdal county court).

There is currently a ban in place on base jumping from the moutain because of the high risks involved.

According to Romsdals Budstikke (local newspaper), Thomas Berg Hestad is horrified about the verdict.

- This is insane. I have to pay a hefty fine for doing a base jump, while others, who commit more serious crimes only get a slap on the wrist. I think this verdict is too harsh, the base jumper says.
Thomas Berg Hestad was also fined NOK 20 000 back in 2003, for having done a similar jump from the same mountain.

Hestad has however no plans of giving up base jumping, even after he was handed this unusually strict verdict from the court in Romsdal.
