The defence lawyer representing accused fraudster Bjarte Baasland, the son of Stavanger bishop Ernst Baasland, is considering taking legal action against the foreign gambling companies that allowed her client to gamble and lose between NOK 60-70 million on their internet sites.
We will look into whether it is possible to legally retrieve part of, or the entire amount of the money lost to the gambling companies, Bjarte Baasland’s defence attorney, Hege Birkeland Ersdal says to Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet.
Baasland has according to his lawyer lost somewhere between NOK 60 -70 million to foreign internet gambling companies Bet365 and Centrebet.
Head of the Norwegian Lottery Commission, Atle Hamar supports taking legal action against the gambling companies.
Law Professor, Viggo Hagstrøm, head of the Bankklagenemnda (Norwegian appeal court for bank customers), is on the other hand doubtful as to whether Baasland would be successful if such a law suit ever made it to the courts.
–It is my understanding that Baasland placed these bets while he was living abroad in the Czech Republic. This is outside of Norwegian jurisdiction, and I seriously doubt that he would be able to reach a successful outcome in those countries, Hagstrøm says.
