Man accused of starting four fires in Bergen

A man has been arrested by police in Bergen suspected of having started several fires this afternoon. Four other individuals were apprehended in connection with the arrest and escorted down to the police station.

- The four men were heavily intoxicated so we decided to take them down to the police station to sober up, head of operations at Hordaland police Department Asbjørn Andersen said.

The four individuals are not suspected of being involved in any of the fires.

The fires were quickly put out

Within a short period of time several fires broke out. The first reported incident was in a storage shed in a basement in no. 51 Ibsens gate. Then a second one was reported in no 9 Edvard Griegs vei.The two houses are only 100 meters apart, just south of Danmarksplass.

At 19.15 a third fire was reported in Ibsens gate, this time in no 55. And then fifteen minutes later a fourth fire was reported, once again in no 9 Edvard Griegs vei.

- A man has been arrested suspected of having started all four fires, head of operations Asbjørn Andersen said.

Technical evidence found at the scene has led the police to formally charge the man in connection with the incidents.The Bergen fire department managed to extinguish the fires before they could cause any serious damage to the buildings. All four fires started in the basements of the buildings.

No one was hurt.

The residents were evacuated, but they were allowed to return to the buildings shortly afterwards.
