Muscat nuts have become the latest drug of choice with the young people in Asker and Bærum. If consumed in large amounts the product can cause a strong hallucinogenic effect.-At times it’s been next to impossible to get hold of Muscat nuts, because the shops selling the product are sold out, police superintendent, Kjell Thune, from the Asker and Bærum Police Department tells local newspaper Budstikka.no.
The nut has a strong hallucinogenic effect that can last for several days. However the drug is not popular with heavy drug users because of its severe side effects.
-Kids have been using this drug on and off for a long time. Some years we see several cases, and other years hardly any at all. The nut causes a hallucinogenic effect very similar to that of happy mushrooms and LSD, representative from The Norwegian National Drug Research Institute, Torbjørn Busæt tells VG Nett.
It takes up to six hours before the drug starts to work, and the effects can last up to three days. The drug is considered lethal in heavy doses.
