NOK 5,8 billion to Amazon fund

Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg announced today that Norway will donate NOK 5.8 billion (US$ 1 billion) to the newly established Amazon fund. The money will be used on measures that will help slash greenhouse gas emissions.

-Stopping deforestation in Brazil is the most cost effect way of reducing CO2 emissions, the prime minister said.

The rain forest will be kept under constant observation with the aid of satellites, and this will give us a unique opportunity to observe the extent of the deforestation in Brazil.

- We will however only transfer money from the fund once we have solid proof that the deforestation has stopped. This way we’ll be able to control that the money goes to their intended purpose, the prime minister who’s currently on an official visit to Brazil said.
