The Norwegian Government wants to ban online gambling and make it a punishable offence for Norwegian banks to engage in monetary transactions with foreign online gambling companies .
Several foreign online gambling companies are actively marketing products that are illegal in Norway to Norwegian internet users. The Norwegian Government wants to put an end to this, and it intends to make it a punishable offence for Norwegian banks to engage in monetary transactions with these companies.
- We decided to do this because the services provided by some of these companies can, in some cases lead to a gambling addiction. Several people have lost everything they own due to excessive gambling, and after the recent ban on slot machines in Norway, these online gambling sites have now become the biggest source of gambling addiction in Norway, Minister of Culture, Trond Giske told NRK (Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation).
Spokesperson for The Association of Businesses in Norway, Leif Osland, doesn’t believe that the ban will have the desired effects.
He believes that people will go on playing regardless of such a ban.
-These gambling companies will most likely start to offer their Norwegian customers the options of setting up foreign bank accounts, and the use of foreign payment systems. This will make it next to impossible for the Norwegian Government to control this activity.
